November 21, 2013. (Romereports.com) To mark the World Fisheries Day 2013, the Vatican issued a message calling for greater social protection for fishermen and their families.
The message, issued by the Pontifical Council for the Pastoral Care of Migrants and Itinerant People, talks about the preservation of fish stocks for future generations.
But it also warned about excessive commercialization, which hurts local fishermen. The message added that a globalized market can also lead to exploitation of workers from low income countries.
As a solution, the Vatican called on world governments to ratify the Work in Fishing Convention 2007. The measure would provide proper salaries and safe working conditions for those who earn a living from the seas.
