Colombo, March 26 (Daily Mirror) – It is not practical, nor is there a scientifically proven method to prevent crocodiles from arriving at the coastline, and it has become a common occurrence, a Wild Life Department official said.
He made this comment when inquired about a crocodile spotted off the Mount Lavinia coast in recent days, which caused panic among fishermen and beachgoers.
Video footage circulating on social media showed the crocodile attacking a fishing boat.
However, the Sri Lanka Lifeguard Association reported that the number of crocodiles in the sea near Mount Lavinia has increased in recent days.
They said that both tourists and fishermen have been severely affected by this and urged authorities to provide an urgent solution to the problem.
Meanwhile, an official from the Wildlife Department said that crocodiles arriving on beaches between Panadura and Galle Face is a natural occurrence.
Previously, crocodiles have been spotted in the Wellawatta, Dehiwala, Mount Lavinia and Galle Face coastal areas.
Accordingly, wildlife authorities have launched operations to remove these animals.
The official noted that crocodiles appearing in coastal areas has become a common occurrence but only gains attention when people witness it. He urged the public to be cautious and vigilant when walking near these waterways.
“It is not practical, nor is there a scientifically proven method to permanently remove crocodiles from their habitat. Even if we relocate them, they return to the same habitat. Removing crocodiles from their natural environment is not the right solution,” he said.
