Colombo, March 26 (Daily Mirror) – Colombo Chief Magistrate Thanuja Lakmali ordered the detention of two police constables attached to the Welikada Police and two other suspects for 48 hours to facilitate further investigations into an abduction, assault and robbery amounting to Rs. 1.6 million.
The incidents occurred within the Keselwatta and Aduruppu Street police divisions recently.
According to police investigations, on March 10, an individual was abducted near a state bank in Keselwatta, during which Rs. 1.6 million was stolen from him.
Following a complaint lodged with the Keselwatta Police, two constables from the Welikada Police were arrested in connection with the crime.
Subsequent inquiries revealed that on March 11, in the Aduruppu Street police division, a representative of a remittance agency responsible for handling funds of migrant workers was transporting Rs. 1.5 million by motorcycle for bank deposit. The suspects, who arrived in a three-wheeler and another motorcycle, allegedly robbed him of Rs. 1 million.
Further investigations uncovered that the two police constables involved in the robbery were dressed in police sports attire at the time of the incident.
The Keselwatta Police informed court that the primary suspect remains at large and that efforts are continuing to apprehend him.
The four detained suspects are Selambarani Shiva, Sebastian Kanagaraja and Welikada Police Constables Kasun and Rishan Udith.
