A can of salmon from a company called Blue Star was found to be unfit for human consumption. A housewife from Kurana, Katunayake, who experienced this issue, informed the officers at the Public Health Inspectorate in Negombo. She also sent relevant photos via WhatsApp.
After a few days, when we inquired about the situation with the Public Health Inspector, he stated that since the can of salmon was purchased from a supermarket in the Katunayake area, all the details had been forwarded to a relevant officer at the Seeduwa Public Health Inspectorate. However, both the salmon production company and the housewife who filed the complaint fall under the jurisdiction of the Negombo Public Health Inspectorate Division, while the shop that sold the substandard salmon is located within the Seeduwa Public Health Inspectorate’s area.
None of this seemed to address the housewife’s complaint adequately. A representative from the salmon production company offered her some free cans of salmon. When she declined, he requested her bank account number to transfer money instead. She firmly refused, stating that she only wanted the salmon to be safe for consumption.
Meanwhile, the head of the Public Health Inspectors’ Association recently announced that inspections would be increased during the festive season.
